Tata Motors Ltd

Tata Group is a name that in India evokes feeling of trust and confidence. It is a name that has been synonymous with ethical practices across the Indian sub continent. TM was formerly known as TELCO, (Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company), is one of the many companies which has been promoted by the Tata Groups. Tata Motors was established in 1945, when the company began manufacturing locomotives. The company manufactured its first commercial vehicle in 1954. Few facts about Tata Motors Ltd Motors is India's largest automobile company, with revenues of US$ 8.8 billion in 2007-08. With over 4 million Tata vehicles plying in India, it is the leader in commercial vehicles and among the top three in passenger vehicles. TM is one amongst the 11 Indian companies listed on the NYSE. Group, it is one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles. The OICA ranked it as the world's 20th largest automaker, based on figures for 2006. It is also the world's fourth largest truck manufacturer and the second largest bus manufacturer. Tata cars, buses and trucks are being marketed in several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia and South America. Through subsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in South Korea, Thailand and Spain. TM launched its much awaited car Tata Nano, with a price tag of Rs 100,000 in January 2008. Tata Motors Acquisition Spree In 1993, it signed with a JV with Cummins Engine Co., Inc., for the manufacture of high horsepower and emission friendly diesel engines. It was an effort made to reduce the pollution in the existing Tata engines and to produce more environmentally friendly engines. Furthering the trail of JVs it signed a joint venture agreement with Tata Holset Ltd., UK, for manufacturing turbochargers to be used on Cummins engines. 2004, it bought Daewoo's truck manufacturing unit, now known as Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, in South Korea. It also, acquired a 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera South Africa, giving it controlling rights in the company. Motors has also formed a 51:49 joint venture with Marcopolo South Africa, a Brazil-based global leader in bus body building. It also has strategic alliance with Fiat. In March 2008, it finalized a deal with Ford Motor Company to acquire their British Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) business, which also includes the Rover, Daimler and Lanchester brand names. The purchase was completed in 2008. Tata Motors has its manufacturing base in Jamshedpur, Lucknow, Pune and Singur.
